ISO 50001 certification for Maisons du Monde, a mark of commitment issued by Apave Certification

07/03/2023

To reduce its carbon footprint, every company needs to set up a methodical energy management system.   As part of a virtuous approach to reducing its carbon footprint, Maisons du Monde, the French retailer, furnisher and decorator, has called on Apave Certification to implement ISO 50001 certification for all its shops in France.

Why implement ISO 50001

at Maisons du Monde?

Supported by the company's operations department, the energy management approach corresponds to "a genuine CSR objective: to trade as a citizen", explains Margaux Plantive-Triger, Environment, Energy and Waste Project Manager at Maisons du Monde.

"So the search for savings was not our primary objective. When we embarked on the process to obtain ISO 50001 certification, we wanted to go beyond the regulatory energy audits, because we expected more added value", she continues.

Thanks to this certification, Apave has been working with Maisons du Monde since 2021 to achieve two key strategic objectives:

  1. Reducing consumption (by 45% between 2016 and 2024)
  2. Purchasing green energy, where possible with a guarantee of local (national) origin.

The support we received enabled us to benefit from the expertise and practical advice of a third party. Our Apave contacts were very attentive, available and responsive, and were very supportive, providing us with examples of documents to help us formalise our procedures. The next step will be to extend the scope of ISO 50001 certification to other countries.

Why make a commitment

with Apave Certification?

Implementing the ISO 50 001 standard initially enables organisations to establish the systems and processes needed to improve energy performance, particularly in relation to energy efficiency, use and consumption. It also aims to help each company reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy-related costs.

For the environmental project manager at Maisons du Monde, it is vital to be structured in terms of data, to have solid previous data on energy consumption and a real qualitative database.

The certification process presented by Apave Certification has enabled the chain of shops to "better formalise processes and protocols". "In terms of reducing energy consumption and improving energy performance, the preparation of audits with the shops has enabled best practices to be identified, such as limiting lighting periods and adjusting lighting levels according to the time of day and the location of the shops", she continues.  The approach that has been put in place has involved the shop teams, who of course have a role to play on a day-to-day basis, and in particular the CSR referents. It has also made it possible to question practices that had become ingrained in our habits. "I'm also proud of the teams who have worked together on this joint continuous improvement project".

The ISO 50001 standard

what is an energy management system (ems)?

ISO 50 001 - Energy Management System - defines specific requirements for an energy management system (EMS), enabling an organisation to:

  • Develop and implement a more efficient energy policy
  • Establish objectives, targets and action plans enabling it to meet the commitments expressed in this policy
  • Measure the results of this energy policy based on data
  • Take the necessary steps to continuously improve its energy performance.

It contributes to the implementation of a continuous improvement plan, which results in more efficient use of available energy sources, improved competitiveness and a reduction in greenhouse gases. It encourages the implementation of an energy monitoring plan and energy analyses.

Energy saving, energy management and energy performance are now essential objectives in management systems. This improves quality management. Apave Certification carries out audits with the aim of awarding ISO 50001 certification, but also supports players of all sizes in their improvement initiatives, with numerous benefits for their brand image.

This certification service is carried out under COFRAC accreditation (in accordance with ISO 17021-1) for the certification of management systems.
