KC product certification: the passport to South Korea

In January, Apave Certification signed a partnership with the KTL (Korea Testing Laboratory), one of the unique recognised bodies for KC (Korea Certification) certification, which is compulsory to export your products to South Korea.

With this new product certification partnership, Apave Certification is strengthening its international presence and allowing its clients to comply with product certification legislation worldwide.

How the partnership works?

Products intended for export are tested in our laboratories in France according to the guidelines laid down by the KTL. Upon completion of successful testing, products that comply with KC standards will receive certification and the KC logo applied to the product under conditions set by KC scheme.

Once the certification has been awarded, surveillance audits will be carried out at the production factory for safety certification subjected items.

There are three types of certification in the KC scheme:

  • KC Safety Certification
  • KC Safety Confirmation
  • Supplier Confirmation of Conformity

"We are very pleased to deliver KC certification to our customers. This certification will enable us to enter a new market, meeting customer expectations and ambitions to export electrical and electronic equipment", says Thomas SAILLARD, Product Certification Manager at Apave.

The three routes of KC certification

Safety KC certification

Represents the most complex certification process with the most stringent requirements. In addition to product tests in Korea, the production site must also be audited with follow-up inspections biennially to maintain the validity of the certificates.

KC Safety Confirmation

Requires product testing in Korea with applications to complete the certification process.

Application for certification – Product testing – Issuance of safety confirmation report

Supplier Confirmation of Conformity

The manufacturer must ensure and be able to demonstrate that products meet Korean standards. Testing in Korea is usually the easiest option for this. This type has also become known as the KC Supplier Conformity.

Application – Testing in France/Korea – Issuance of test report

Which products are concerned?

The products covered by this certification are (domestic) electrical appliances and components.
KC certification is compulsory for products listed in the Electrical Appliances Safety Control Law:

  • Wires and cables
  • Electrical switch
  • Capacitor and power supply filter
  • Electrical equipment parts and connecting parts
  • Electrical protection parts
  • Transformer
  • Household appliances

The KTL

KTL ( Korea Testing Laboratory) is one of three recognised testing laboratories and certification bodies in South Korea.

KC Certification

The main objective of KC certification is to identify and eliminate potential risks to consumer health and safety. After receiving KC certification, the corresponding product is authorised to bear the KC mark, to be exported to South Korea and to be sold in the country. Products falling within the scope of KC Safety scheme cannot be imported into Korea without valid certification, which is checked by customs during regular inspections.
Without KC certification, recalls, financial penalties and even a sales ban may be imposed on the manufacturer, importer and/or seller.
