LIBYA - GEOCEAN

Libye: the Al Khajil project

Client Issue

As part of the Al Khajil project in Libya, the company GEOCEAN (ENTREPOSE CONTRACTING Group) wanted to see non-destructive testing be performed on welds using the TOFD ultrasonic technique as an alternative to gamma radiography or X-rays. This technique, which is safer (it uses no radioactive sources or ionising rays) and less restrictive in terms of operator safety, allows high production rates to be achieved. The characteristics of the assemblies to be tested were as follows: (Grade: API 5L Gr B.), [Dimensions: diameter 610 mm (24'') x 15.9 mm.], (Type of joint: Butt joint.), (Welding process: SMAW E6010).

Result/Testimonial

Apave mobilised 2 TOFD NDT teams, each of which was made up of 2 multi-disciplinary technicians (RT, PT, MT, EN 473 level II UT and ASNT) who had also held TOFD certification for more than 3 months. These teams were supervised by a level III UT mission supervisor.

Apave Solution

Apave offers a wide range of NDT techniques: conventional non-destructive tests (radiography: gamma radiography and X-rays, penetrant inspection, magnetic-particle inspection, ultrasonic inspection), but also more advanced techniques: TOFD, phased array, digital radiography, eddy current, Iris, Long Range UT, AUT, ACFM, etc. For the problem faced by GEOCEAN, it is the TOFD ultrasonic method which was used. The services were carried out in accordance with the following reference documents: [XP CEN-TS 14751 (TOFD method)], (API Standard 1104 § 9.6 and § 11.4.), (EN 473 and/or SNT-TC-1A.), [EN 1714 (UT)].
